Acoma Pottery

The story of our famous handmade pottery and local artisans

The pottery of Acoma artisans is widely recognized for its fluted rims, delicate  walls and beautiful geometric designs. The potters of Acoma Pueblo implement regional techniques in their creative process. They collect clay from limited sources and design for specific use,  fire at high temperatures and decorate according to tribal traditions.

These pots were traditionally hand-coiled with hand-mixed clay and custom slip. Some modern potters have chosen to construct traditional pottery using molds. This ensures the integrity of the stunning traditional designs and saves creation time. Modern artists may also fire their pottery in a kiln rather than using traditional methods. The authenticity of Acoma remains translated in how the artist chooses to express themselves. Collectors can differentiate between the construction methods by noting structural nuances. Custom pieces tend to be thinner, lighter, and have coarse internal walls.

Regardless of the construction method used, the individual artist expression shines through in their designs. Traditional designs include rainbow bands, parrots, and deer; or a black and brown motif with geometric pattern and impressively accurate fine lines. While orange and black are Acoma traditional colors, some modern artists have begun to incorporate new, vibrant colors. This new generation of artists have introduced not only new colors but employ hatching patterns to symbolize rain, lightning, thunderclouds, and mountains. Designs are heavily influenced by the cycle of life, water, and the sky.

Acoma pottery, in addition to its prized artistic value, was created to be functional.  Pottery provided storage, tools for cooking, and implements for eating. The men of Acoma took hand crafted water jugs camping and on long hunting trips. Some pots were used to store precious seeds needed for planting in the coming seasons. Today, Acoma pottery is revered and collected for its unique artistic characteristics and its immensely rich historical value.

The Haak'u Museum and Sky City Cultural Center provide education and precious glimpses into the Pueblo of Acoma.  Experience the culture, meet the artists and learn more while visiting the Market Plaza.  The artists display, create, and share living traditions.
